Cassandra Jardine article on private schools

There was a really interesting article in the Daily Telegraph recently on the closure of private schools. It discussed the trouble caused to pupils when their school closes, which is usually due to falling pupil numbers.

Through researching and then launching http://allaboutschoolfees.com in early March - right in the middle of this recession! - we have been amazed at how few parents really understand how much private education costs. Most simply assume they can, or cannot, afford it and leave it there. The assumption that every school costs as much as Harrow, Eton or Winchester is very widely held, and its wrong! Parents don't look around to see what fees a selection of local private schools charge, and they don't set up savings plans but assume they can simply "pay as they go". This is fine until their earnings take a hit, then they are forced to take their children out of school.

We know private school isn't cheap, and that many people don't approve of the system but we are equally convinced that if more people knew just how affordable it is, then more children would be privately educated. Equally, if parents planned their finances over a longer term they would be less affected by any downturns in the economy and their earnings.
allaboutschoolfees.com creates bespoke fee and savings schedules for private schools through a database we've manually put together of every fee for every private school in the country (well about 97% of schools but we're working on the rest).
